Progesterone Testing and Ovulation Cytology

Progesterone Testing

This simple blood test can tell us the level of progesterone within the blood. By comparing this to highly corrolated markers, we can establish where your dog is within her oestrus cycle.

Our Veterinary professional will take your dog's blood sample on site and process the blood for testing in our lab. The processing and testing of samples is completed in roughly 2 hours.

If you prefer to have your dog's blood taken at your own vets, you can bring the blood to our lab for same day testing.

PLEASE NOTE: All blood samples must be taken from your dog or received at our lab by 14:30 for same day results.

Cytology

Cytology can be used to help determine the timing of your dog's receptivity period. Once your dog has entered her season, within the first 9 days her oestrogen levels will rise. This will then initiate a LH (lutinising hormone) surge and ovulation happens shortly after. You can add a Cytology to your progesterone test for an extra £19.20.

Why Use Vaginal Cytology?

Vaginal cytology can help to determine the date at which your dog will ovulate, so you can inseminate your dog at the optimum time and increase the chance of obtaining a pregnancy. The rise in oestrogen happens during pro-oestrus and drops prior to the LH surge. The cells within the vaginal tract cornify as a response of the oestrogen levels increasing and this can be seen by performing a vaginal smear.
